Welcome to Dr. Mukundan Subramanian’s website. He is an experienced ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon with more than 16 years of experience. 

Dr. Mukundan completed his MBBS and MS- ENT from MGIMS Sewagram, Nagpur University. He trained in Head & Neck Cancer Surgery at various Hospitals in Paris, France, and obtained DU-CCF (Diploma in Head Neck Oncology) from the University of South Paris-XI in Paris in 2012. He was also awarded Master and Post Graduate Diploma in Swallowing Disorders from the European Society of Swallowing Disorders (ESSD) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona from 2018-2020. Dr Mukundan was Faculty & Consultant at the Department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Chennai from 2009-2019 and was in charge of the Voice & Swallowing Clinic.

Dr. Mukundan Subramanian offers a wide range of services in adults and children including Routine ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, Management of Vertigo & Balance Disorders, Dysphagia Management in Elderly/ Neurologic/ Head Neck Cancer patients, Office based Laryngology and Head & Neck Oncology.

Dr. Mukundan has two main subspecialty interest areas: the first being dizziness & vertigo and the other on disorders of the throat, swallowing, and voice.

With the intention of upgrading his skills to the management of the balance disordered patient, he has also completed a Certificate Course in the Assessment & Management of Vestibular Disorders awarded by Yenepoya University in 2022.

Dr. Mukundan has presented numerous research papers at local & national ENT conferences and has won several awards for his clinical work, including at the notable PHONOCON meeting in 2022. He also has several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and is also regularly invited as a speaker at several National scientific meetings, especially on the topic of Swallowing Disorders.

What is a Vestibular Disorder?
VERTIGO, DIZZINESS & BALANCE COMPLAINTS often referred to as VESTIBULAR DISORDERS may result from disturbances in the ear, the neck, the muscles and joints, the eyes, the nervous system connections of these structures, or a combination of these.

What to expect from Specialized Vertigo Clinic & ENT Centre, Chennai?

What are some common causes of vestibular disorders?

BPPV: caused by calcium crystals floating in the ear and is associated with a brief spinning sensation triggered by head movements. Most cases can be resolved in one clinic visit with repositioning maneuvers.

Meniere’s disease: over-accumulation of fluid in the inner ear causes attacks of vertigo, ringing in the ear, and fluctuating hearing lossTreatment consists of salt restriction and medications.

Vestibular Migraine: A very common condition especially in young females with a family history of migraine. Dietary and lifestyle changes in addition to medications for migraine are helpful in treating this condition.

Vestibular neuritis: s probably caused by a virus that causes swelling around the balance nerve. It is associated with intense spinning dizziness, nausea, vomiting and difficulty walking or standing up on the first few days that gradually subsides. Some people also develop difficulty hearing in one ear. Physical therapy can help speed patients to a full recovery.

Stroke/ TIA’s/ Medications/ Multiple Sclerosis/ Head Injury / Ear Infections can lead to vestibular disorders

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS:

· Please refrain from taking the following types of medications 24 hours prior to their appointment: ALCOHOL/ANTI-VOMITING DRUGS/ANTI-VERTIGO DRUGS/ SEDATIVES.

· Please bring a relative or a friend with you for the appointment

· Please allow 1- 2 hours for your appointment.

· Please bring the list of medications along with previous scans and medical reports

· Do not wear contact lenses or mascara during the appointment. Wear your glasses instead.

·  AVOID eating for at least 1 HOUR before the test

Vertigo: It is a sensation of self-motion with any of your movements or the sensation of distorted self-motion during an otherwise normal head movement. It could be spinning vertigo or non-spinning vertigo (swaying, tilting, bobbing, bouncing, or sliding sensations).

Dizziness: It is the sensation of disturbed spatial orientation. It could also come spontaneously or be triggered by head and body positions, sound or Valsalva like manoeuvres

Vestibulo-visual symptoms: These are false sensations of jerky visual flow or false sensation that the visual surround is oscillating or bouncing or bobbing or jerking

Postural symptoms: These could be unsteadiness or instability with a tendency to veer in a particular direction (called directional pulsion), balance-related near falls, or balance-related falls.
